The US Army renews computer and technology training contract with Giant Campus to benefit the families and community of Fort Lewis Army Post located near Tacoma, WA.
Seattle, WA - August 2005 - For the third year in a row, Ft Lewis Army Post (Tacoma, WA) has renewed its technology training contract with Giant Campus. Contracted through the Post's MWR (morale, welfare, and recreation) Program, Giant Campus provides its nationally-acclaimed Cybercamps program for the Post's youth, and live and online computer courses for adults and families.
The Army doesn't have anything quite like this program, states Richard Geier, Colonel U.S. Army (Retired), director of military programs for Giant Campus. We've seen a tremendous amount of interest and participation in the program. And it's the type of program that makes a direct and immediate difference in the quality of life for our military families. This program is bridging a technological gap. Youth are especially benefiting. They're learning the skills they need to stay competitive in a technologically savvy world.
A technology gap exists because only 20-30% of military children have home Internet access. Whereas according to recent reports, 83% of family households in the US report computer ownership and 78% of children regularly go online. Giant Campus fills the gap with its research-proven teaching methods and a unique web-based curriculum.
Fort Lewis, named after Meriwether Lewis of the famed Lewis and Clark expedition, is one of the largest and most modern military reservations in the United States. Consisting of 87,000 acres of prairie land cut from the glacier-flattened Nisqually Plain, it is the premier military installation in the Northwest. Fort Lewis has more than 25,000 soldiers and civilian workers. The post supports 120,000(+) retirees and more than 29,000 family members living both on and off post.
